Dave's Newsletter

Howdy,

How are you goin? Happy New Year to you all, I trust it was a safe and happy one. I’m currently chilling out in the winterless North camping with the family so if this newsletter comes across as a bit random, it is likely to be because it has been written over 2 or 3 spells interspersed with kids, boogie boards, kayaks, cockle gathering and Nana Naps and may seem a little disjointed. The girls will no doubt give it a good going over and proof read it with a critical eye before public distribution.

Christmas in our house was the usual affair of kids flat out unwrapping gifts, wrapping paper fights and the dog parked up in the middle of the whole affair, trying to sneak off with the odd kid’s pressie and tearing big bits of wrapping into many small bits of wrapping. Poppy as always received a wrapped present Christmas which she duly unwrapped in amongst the chaos of kids, pressies and assorted flotsam and jetsom of Christmas. As yet her gift has not been seen again but no doubt it will be excavated from the garden and make reappearance amidst much tail wagging, bum wiggling and shaking of smelly stuff to be showered about the lounge room to the protest of my long suffering wife.  Long suffering she is as the animals that are currently residing with us have all been delivered by me. I just kinda turn up with them and the kids all go gaga and they are in.

A little stray kitten I found in the store room on site one day was one of these, bold as brass this little black kitten came around the corner meowing at the top of her voice. I picked her up and carted her off to the office where she proceeded to ingratiate herself with the locals and meow at the top of her voice. Once fed (with Jimbos) she settled down for the afternoon. I carted her out to the car and she happily sat on the centre console all the way home, not a waver or a wail. Methinks she knew she was onto a good thing eh. These days you almost have to tranquilise her to get her into a cat cage.

Once home I let her loose in the house where she promptly parked herself on Zoes (my then 3 year olds) bed. When Zoe discovered her she exclaimed “Dad, come see what CC laid” (CC is our big black cat). What came first, the Kitten or the egg? This cat is aptly named Ono, which is what my wife said when I turned up home with another stray. She is now our night cat, she’s not keen on Poppy so hangs out of sight until Poppy is in put out for the night then comes in for the night shift.

I have been given the hard word though and it’s now a ‘me or the animals’ agreement so I haven’t turned up home with any more animals for a couple of years. If I had my way there would be a few more beasts hanging around but hey, you have to keep the peace eh.

As you are aware, we are always on the lookout for slightly interesting, dodgy or just plain weird stuff to give you a little levity in your day so from the Jimbos “Now that’s Just Dodgy Department” , check out this link relating to canine flatulence (not something to be sniffed at)

It’s just plain silly really but hey, there are people out there that will most likely buy them?

Thanks to all of you that responded to our feeding survey before Christmas.  It’s been great to have an insight into what you are all feeding and why. The main theme of the responses being that people are feeding raw because of the perceived benefits and by and large, the results of the diets are proving beneficial to the animals with a larger percentage of people stating their animals are healthier since changing to raw than what they were before hand. This being the case I think we will keep hanging around doing what we are doing for another year or two.

It would be fair to say there is a bit of confusion over raw feeding as there is no clear set of guidelines behind raw feeding and no scientific basis for the feeding regime, my rule of thumb (which is a funny saying when you think about it) is if you want to raw feed your animals, make raw meat the basis of the diet and build the rest of the diet around that, if you want to feed a little dry food, do so. Consider how you feed yourself, not complete and balanced in every meal but gaining a balance over a number of meals by eating the appropriate food types. If you need help, give us a call or drop us and email and we will help where we can.
